1996 Adult Health and Nutrition Survey

The variety of food choices determines the balance of our meals. In this regard, the French enjoy a rich and diverse selection.

But, in practical terms, what do they eat every day? How do they plan their meals? Where do they eat, with whom, and for how long? From rural grocery stores to suburban hypermarkets, where do they shop? What do they know about what they eat? How do they stay informed? What do they believe? Who do they trust? Between tradition and innovation, how do their choices and preferences take shape?

This Health and Nutrition Barometer answers all these questions and many others, presenting the detailed results of the first national survey on the diet and health of the French population. A representative sample of the adult population (nearly two thousand individuals aged 18 to 75 living in France) answered, over the course of a thousand hours of interviews, nearly three hundred thousand questions exploring what the French had eaten the previous day (24-hour recall), how often they consume certain foods (more than twenty-five thousand foods were coded), as well as their opinions, attitudes, and knowledge in this area.

"Health and Fitness," "Main Foods Consumed," "Beverages," "Shopping and Preparation," and "Meals" are the five main chapters of this book, intended for anyone concerned with food as a factor in health, balance, and well-being.
