2005 Regional Atlas of Alcohol Consumption. Data from INPES/OFDT.
This first Regional Atlas of Alcohol Consumption, the result of a collaboration between INPES and OFDT, aims to meet a growing demand for reliable data at the local level. It draws on two major national surveys that provide the most comprehensive coverage of alcohol use among the general population (ages 15–75) and among adolescents (age 17). The samples from the Health Barometer and Escapad, collected in 2005, each comprise more than 30,000 individuals; they cover not only mainland France but also the four overseas departments, French Polynesia, and New Caledonia, and provide a wealth of information on alcohol consumption. Statisticians from the OFDT and IN PES, specialists in the field, offer an original analysis that accurately describes regional variations in drinking patterns, intoxication, risky drinking behaviors, and preferences for specific types of alcohol. The book includes a detailed methodological section, a summary of the main national results measured in the Health Barometer and Escapad, a section with annotated maps and detailed regional profiles presenting the characteristics of alcohol consumption across the entire metropolitan area and each of the regions, and, finally, a general summary. Data standardization, along with the systematic use of multivariate models that account for the main sociodemographic factors linked to alcohol use, helps identify potential interpretations of the geographical differences between individual and sociocultural factors related to consumption. Finally, this atlas provides quantification that allows for a nuanced view of the trend toward the globalization of drinking practices and highlights the significance of regional influences.
