Breast Cancer Screening in France: Practices and Changing Habits Among Women Aged 18 to 75, Health Barometer 2004–2005.

Organized breast cancer screening has been available nationwide since 2004. The 5th edition of the Health Barometer, conducted from October 2004 to February 2005, surveyed 30,514 randomly selected individuals aged 12–75 by telephone regarding various health behaviors, including cancer screening. The prevalence of women eligible for organized screening (ages 50–74) who had undergone “a mammogram in the past two years” has shown a very positive and significant trend: 43.8% in 1995; 52.2% in 2000; and 65.4% in 2005. The increase in prevalence (+16.4 percentage points) was greatest among women with low incomes (less than 900 euros) between 2000 and 2005, and the prevalence gap between the poorest and the wealthiest women narrowed (17.8% vs. 9.4%) during the same period. These trends justify continuing efforts to reach women from lower-income backgrounds and encourage those who receive individualized mammograms to participate in organized screening.
