Accidents Involving Ninth-Grade Students: Trends from 2004 to 2009

Objectives: To describe accidents among eighth-grade students and their trends between 2004 and 2009. Subjects, materials, and methods: The same survey was conducted in schools among eighth-grade students, using representative samples of 7,000 students in 2003 and 2008. Main results: The quarterly incidence rate was 9.4% in 2003–2004 compared to 10.3% in 2008–2009. Traffic accidents accounted for 15% and 10% of cases, respectively (involving a motorized two-wheeler in 80% of cases), with the remainder consisting of accidents in daily life. Overall, the characteristics have changed little over the past 5 years: many accidents on sports fields (31% and 33%), more than half involving falls (53% and 56%), and ankle sprains in one out of five cases (22% and 20%). Sports-related accidents, which have decreased (70% and 60%), most often occurred during team ball sports (55% and 51%), gymnastics or dance (8% and 9%), combat sports (7% and 6%), and sports on wheels or rollers (7% and 10%). Conclusions: The results of these two surveys provide an unprecedented overview of accidents among ninth-grade students. They help inform prevention efforts. The few changes observed between 2004 and 2009 will need to be confirmed by the survey scheduled for 2016–17. (R.A.)
