Breastfeeding: Recommendations from the PNNS Working Group.

As part of the National Nutrition and Health Program, a group of experts, at the request of the Director General of Health, conducted an assessment of the current state of breastfeeding and formulated recommendations to promote it, given its importance for children’s health. The working group recommends, in particular, establishing a coordinator, a national commission, and local liaisons at the national, regional, and maternity ward levels; improving training for healthcare professionals; and extending paid maternity leave for the postnatal period from ten to fourteen weeks. All of the proposals take into account “absolute respect for each woman’s personal beliefs.”
