Characteristics of clients seen in the Young Consumers’ Addiction Counseling Program, 2005–2007
Introduction - From March 2005 to December 2007, the Youth Substance Use Counseling Centers (CJC) served 45,000 users of psychoactive substances. This article describes the diverse profiles of those seeking counseling and the support provided to them, by tracing their individual journeys through the program. Method - As with the first edition of the survey in 2005, data collection was conducted via an anonymous questionnaire administered to frontline professionals between March 20 and April 20, 2007, with patient follow-up continuing through June 30, 2007. Descriptive analysis was presented by gender and age; analysis of the predictors of dropout and successful attempts to reduce cannabis use was conducted using multivariate analysis. Results - Of the 3,788 clients seen at 214 of the 274 CJCs, 2,938 were cannabis users, 81% of whom were male and generally of legal age (83%). Nearly 40% were daily cannabis users. Half of the clients were referred by the justice system, compared to 22% who sought help on their own initiative and 30% referred by family, educational, or medical-social services. More than half of the users (53%) were diagnosed with abuse or dependence. The analysis describes the factors influencing the "success" of attempts to reduce use: frequency of cannabis use, reason for use, socio-professional integration, number of visits, gender, and age. It also identifies the population at risk of “dropping out” during follow-up (30% on average), highlighting the significance of gender, consultation stage, expectations upon entering the program, and reasons for cannabis use. Discussion - CJCs function as a platform for identifying and referring diverse populations, most of whom are under judicial supervision. The article demonstrates the critical importance of client adherence to the success of treatment. (R.A.)
