Among skin cancers, melanoma represents a significant public health problem in France due to its prevalence, its lethality, and its rise over the past two decades. This article presents a compilation of incidence data from registries, the CépiDC-Inserm, and INSEE. Analysis of the results shows that in France, while melanoma is more common among women, men are more likely to die from it. The authors conclude that strengthening the epidemiological monitoring of skin cancers—particularly the systematic recording by registries of information on their stage at diagnosis—would allow for a better understanding of the reasons for gender differences, an assessment of the effectiveness of these preventive measures, and, ultimately, better guidance for policymakers where necessary.
