Mental health: What are we talking about?
Long confined to psychiatric disorders, the concept of mental health has expanded to now include everyone’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This comprehensive and inclusive approach—which in no way downplays the reality of mental health disorders and their treatment—recognizes that everyone has mental health, shaped by individual, social, and environmental factors. The "dual continuum model" shows that one can be well despite a mental disorder, or unwell without having one. Consequently, the promotion of mental health involves all public policies, beyond the medical field alone, in order to improve the quality of life for everyone.
