Oral health status of 65-year-old members of the Mutualité sociale agricole who underwent a preventive dental examination, France, 2008
Introduction - The Mutualité sociale agricole (MSA) has implemented an oral health prevention program targeting specific at-risk populations and age groups. The initiative targeting individuals aged 65 and older enabled an initial study on the oral health of MSA-insured individuals in this age group who participated in the preventive examination. Materials and Methods - The study is based on 7,744 individuals who visited their dentist in 2008 for an oral health assessment. The data, which pertain to participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, oral health status, follow-up habits, and care needs, were then standardized to reflect the actual MSA population’s distribution by sex, department, and insurance scheme. Results - On average, participants had more than half of their teeth decayed, missing, or filled. They had an average of 8.5 missing teeth, of which 2.7 were not replaced by a prosthesis. The need for care was also very high in this population. Discussion - This initial study of volunteers undergoing a preventive examination reveals a very high need for priority, even urgent, oral health care. It also highlighted the fact that women, despite having a naturally poorer oral health status than men, have better functional status due to improved care. (R.A.)
