Social Norms and Children.
The child’s place in society and the way children are raised have changed significantly over the past few decades. The child’s empowerment has become the primary goal; children are no longer raised to serve society but to foster their personal growth. As the traditional authority of parents over their children tends to fade, the parent-educator must exercise a “mediating” authority that bridges “being oneself”—the child in their individual quest—and “being together”—the world around them. Education is more than ever a “covert persuasion,” in the words of Pierre Bourdieu.
