Healthcare utilization reflects the frequency of medical consultations, care, and treatments within a population. It involves the unique relationship between a patient and their expectations, needs, access to a healthcare professional, and personal choices. As part of the follow-up to the HPST Act, the "Youth Health" plan and the Psychiatry and Mental Health Plan have emphasized different life stages and ensuring that everyone has access to prevention, care, and social and medical-social support. At the same time, general practitioners and specialists have been encouraged to follow various prevention guidelines and to foster greater coordination between primary care and specialized services. The 2010 Health Barometer provides insight into certain aspects of healthcare utilization among young people aged 15 to 30. It specifically asks young people about the frequency of consultations they have had over the past twelve months with various healthcare professionals: general practitioners, dentists, gynecologists, mental health professionals (psychiatrists and other psychotherapists), specialists, and school doctors and nurses. It addresses the issue of medication use, such as sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and antidepressants. Finally, it examines the prevalence of hospitalizations. All these factors must be analyzed according to patients’ health status. This chapter is divided into three sections: -an introductory overview of young people’s relationship to their health; -a section on young people’s general use of healthcare professionals, delving into specific topics: factors associated with visiting a general practitioner, preventive check-ups, topics discussed during the last visit, dental appointments, forgoing care, and consultations for contraceptive or gynecological reasons; -a section on the use of specialized professionals or services for mental health reasons.[chapter excerpt]
