The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion advocated for a broader vision of health and a shift in health services toward greater emphasis on health promotion beyond the provision of care. Following its publication in 1986, a pilot project was launched in Europe by the World Health Organization in 1992 to encourage hospitals and health services to integrate health promotion concepts into their organizational structure. In 1997, the French network of health-promoting hospitals (HPS) joined the new European network. INPES has been responsible for the national coordination of the HPS network since its creation, as part of its mission to develop prevention and health promotion. The Institute aims to give the national network new momentum across the country by increasing the level of commitment to promoting the health of patients, staff, and the community they serve, without undermining their primary role of treating illnesses. With the support of the international network of health-promoting hospitals, which includes nearly 1,000 hospitals in more than 40 countries worldwide, INPES and the coordinating committee of the French HPS network support healthcare facilities in France in integrating health promotion principles into their policies and service projects. Despite benefits such as improved quality of care, integrating health promotion remains a significant challenge for institutions. The exchange of best practices, methodological support, the provision of tools, and communication are among the benefits of working within a network.
