Effective Interventions for Preventing Infectious Diseases Among Youth Through Hand Hygiene in Schools: A Review of the Literature—Key Findings.
This document is a summary of the report *Validated Interventions for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases Among Young People Through Hand Hygiene in Schools*, produced by INPES. The purpose of this summary is to provide public health officials and practitioners with an overview of interventions whose effectiveness has been validated through scientific protocols. To ensure comprehensiveness, effectiveness, and rigor, this review was conducted using a method developed at INPES in 2010 to select and analyze scientific literature in order to identify relevant interventions and classify them. About ten interventions are identified here as having an impact on the prevention of infectious diseases through hand hygiene among young people. Most studies are conducted in elementary schools; however, some begin as early as preschool or even daycare, or are conducted later in university settings. Almost all are regular interventions. Although the products used differ—regular and/or antibacterial soap, hydroalcoholic gel—they do not differ in terms of effectiveness. Understanding the intervention methods commonly used internationally should inform the discussion of practices developed in France.
