Summary of the work conducted by the Department of Environmental Health at the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance on human exposure variables

Estimating a population’s exposure to a given agent in quantitative health risk assessment (QHRA) requires the use of “human exposure variables” (HEVs) that allow for the individual characteristics of the population in question to be taken into account as much as possible. HEVs aim to describe the anthropometric and physiological variables as well as the behaviors and local habits of a studied population. Since 2002, the Health and Environment Department (DSE) of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance has contributed to the development of a number of HEVs: body mass, time-space budget, tap water consumption, and the amount of soil and dust ingested by children. These VHE were developed using data from studies conducted by various French organizations (French Agency for Food Safety, National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) or are the result of literature reviews. Some of these variables are of interest because they can be used to estimate the exposure of the French population within the framework of EQRS using a deterministic approach or, for some of them, a probabilistic approach, by proposing associated probability distributions. The DSE sought to increase the visibility of these VHE by compiling all of its work in this field into a single summary document. This summary briefly outlines the context of the study that led to the development of the VHE, the method used, the source studies selected, as well as the strengths and limitations identified for each of the proposed datasets.
