National Perinatal Survey. 2021 Report. Births, Two-Month Follow-Up, and Healthcare Facilities
This report describes the health status of mothers and newborns, their characteristics, medical practices during pregnancy and at the time of delivery, and the characteristics of delivery settings in France. As with previous surveys, the results provide an overview of the perinatal situation in 2021 and changes since the 2016 National Perinatal Survey. The 2021 edition of the National Perinatal Survey (ENP) included a 2-month follow-up for women who agreed to participate, making it possible for the first time to describe the health status of mothers two months postpartum, their childbirth experience, the organization of their return home, and the health status of their children during the first two months of life. Data from the 2021 ENP will also be linked to data from the National Health Data System (SNDS) for further analysis. This survey was funded and implemented by the Directorate General for Health (DGS), the Directorate General for Healthcare Provision (DGOS), the Directorate for Research, Studies, Evaluation, and Statistics (DREES), Santé publique France, and the EPOPé Team at Inserm. The follow-up of mothers and children at 2 months was led by Santé publique France. The report presented here was drafted by the Research Team in Obstetric, Perinatal, and Pediatric Epidemiology (EPOPé) of the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), in collaboration with DREES, Santé publique France, and the members of the steering committee. In the Overseas Departments and Regions (DROM), the 2021 ENP was extended over several weeks (with the exception of French Guiana) under the responsibility of Santé publique France and the local Regional Health Agencies (ARS), in order to obtain sufficient sample sizes for high-quality analyses by department. A specific report (ENP 2021 “DROM extension”) will be published for each department. Thus, only the results from mainland France will be discussed in this report, with the exception of Part V, which will present some results related to the DROMs. The fieldwork for the survey was made possible thanks to the participation of the departmental Maternal and Child Protection (PMI) services, perinatal health networks, and maternity ward professionals.
