Sample Professional Stories (2nd edition). Method

The Sample of Occupational Histories (EHP) aims to provide a sample of career trajectories in mainland France in order to describe the links between health and work. Cross-referencing this sample with exposure assessment tools developed by Santé publique France makes it possible to estimate the proportion of workers exposed to occupational hazards in France, taking into account all jobs held throughout their working lives. To compile the second edition of this sample (EHP-2), a survey was conducted alongside the 2020 and 2021 Santé publique France Barometer, in which respondents aged 18 to 75 who had previously worked were invited to participate in the EHP-2. The questionnaire primarily consisted of completing a work history timeline, with the aim of describing participants’ periods of employment and unemployment throughout their careers. Among the Barometer respondents eligible for the EHP-2, 24,966 people (72%) agreed to be contacted to participate in the EHP-2 and to provide their contact information. Data collection took place from May 27 to October 7, 2020, and from March 8, 2021, to February 4, 2022, via an online self-administered questionnaire or a telephone-administered questionnaire. Survey participation was 40.6% (10,141 questionnaires). The implementation of multiple follow-ups and a dual contact and data collection method (email/online and telephone) significantly increased the participation rate without compromising the quality of the responses. This also helped boost participation among groups that tend to be less responsive.
