Safer consumption rooms are the result of a pragmatic approach that has already been widely implemented and evaluated internationally. They are part of the long-standing process of harm reduction, which was established in response to the AIDS epidemic; needle sharing was one of the major causes of transmission. These rooms will be piloted and evaluated for six years before the long-term viability of the program is considered.
