Monitoring of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. 2012–2013 Heating Season Report.

During the heating season, from September 1, 2012, to March 31, 2013,

  • 1,187 cases of CO poisoning were reported, involving 3,855 people, 40 of whom died;

  • 994 cases were accidental domestic poisonings, of which 47 were linked to the use of a portable generator, exposing 140 people—111 of whom were transported to a hospital emergency department and 2 of whom died. The use of the generator, which was improperly placed in the home, was primarily linked to construction work (36%), a power outage (22%), or financial difficulties (13%),- 54 reports were related to the use of a brazier or barbecue, exposing 212 people, 159 of whom were transported to a hospital emergency department and 2 of whom died. These devices were used indoors primarily for heating (40%) or cooking (15%).

  • There were 36 mass incidents, including four in a church and two in an ice rink.
