Matgéné Program Matrix of Pesticide Exposure and Occupations. Accompanying Guide

Occupation-exposure matrices are tools for assessing occupational exposures used in occupational risk epidemiology. They make it possible to automatically assign workers—based solely on their job classifications (occupation within a specific industry)—a probability of being exposed to risk factors present in the workplace. This guide aims to present the pesticide job-exposure matrix developed as part of the Matgéné program. The pesticides assessed in this occupation-exposure matrix are: first, plant protection products (PPPs) used to protect plants from pests, which are grouped into four subcategories (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and others); and second, biocidal products used to protect humans and animals from pests, defined according to three categories: biocidal products (22 subcategories defining types of biocides), medicines with biocidal properties (2 subcategories for human and veterinary medicines), and products used to disinfect medical devices. The pesticide job-exposure matrix was developed by experts following extensive research to document the various occupational exposure scenarios for all workers in France. The matrix provides a probability of exposure (representing the percentage of workers in a given occupation deemed to be exposed) for each of the pesticide subcategories and categories, as well as an overall assessment for all pesticides, for all occupations deemed to be exposed.
