COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for July 14, 2022

Key Points

In Week 27, the increase in COVID-19 incidence slowed but remained at a very high level, with a marked rise in hospital admissions and deaths.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence rates continue to rise in all regions

    • Hospital indicators and number of deaths on the rise

    • More pronounced increase in incidence and hospitalization rates among those aged 90 and older

  • Overseas territories:

    • Virological indicators stable at very high levels in Guadeloupe

    • Incidence rate continues to rise in Réunion

    • Resurgence of the epidemic in Mayotte, with incidence remaining moderate

Variants

  • Continued increase in the proportion of the Omicron BA.5 sublineage in the Flash S26 survey (06/27)

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of July 11, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • Vaccination coverage for the booster dose remains stable at 74.9% among those aged 18 and older and at 84.8% among those aged 65 and older

    • Only 28.5% of those aged 60–79 and 37.1% of those aged 80 and older eligible for the second booster dose have actually received it

  • Given the summer holidays and activities that may lead to increased virus transmission, adherence to the combined measures remains essential to protect the most vulnerable populations, and it is crucial:

    • to self-isolate if you have symptoms or test positive for COVID-19

    • to follow preventive measures, including wearing a mask (around vulnerable people, in crowded indoor spaces—especially on public transportation—or at large gatherings) and washing hands. During this period of prolonged heat, precautions against high temperatures are a priority. Ventilation of enclosed spaces should be limited to the coolest hours of the day.
