COVID-19: Epidemiological Update as of September 2, 2021

Key Points

In Week 34, SARS-CoV-2 transmission continues to decline across the country but remains at a high level, with a decrease in hospital indicators nationwide this week. The situation remains critical in Martinique and Guadeloupe, and is a cause for concern in French Guiana.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence rates and hospitalization rates remain highest in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Occitanie, and Corsica

    • Incidence rates and hospital indicators are decreasing or stable across all regions

    • Incidence rates are decreasing in all age groups, except among 0-9-year-olds (stable) and 3-5-year-olds (slight increase)

    Overseas territories:
    • Guadeloupe and Martinique: incidence rates are decreasing but remain very high

    • Persistent high hospital strain and excess mortality from all causes and across all age groups in these two territories

    • French Guiana: high incidence rates and hospital indicators

Variants

  • 98.5% of cases identified as the Delta variant through sequencing in mainland France as of August 10, 2021

Contact tracing

  • Average number of identified contacts per case remains low, suggesting incomplete identification of contacts by cases

Prevention

  • Vaccination coverage in the general population as of August 31: 72.3% for one dose and 66.0% for full vaccination

  • Improved vaccination coverage among healthcare workers in recent weeks

  • Importance of combined measures: vaccination, preventive measures, and contact tracing
