COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for September 8, 2022

Key Points

In week 35, SARS-CoV-2 transmission continued to decline nationwide, although there were regional variations and differences across age groups. Hospital indicators continued to decline nationwide.

  • Mainland France:

    • Increase in the incidence rate among children under 10 and a trend toward stabilization among those aged 30–49.

    • Stabilization of the incidence rate in certain regions.

    • Hospital admission rates continued to decline in most regions.

  • Overseas territories:

    • High incidence rate in Réunion but declining.

Variants

  • Omicron sublineages: BA.5 is ubiquitous, accounting for 95% of sequences in the Flash S33 survey (08/16)

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of September 5, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • Vaccination coverage for the booster dose remains stable at 74.3% among those aged 18 and older and at 82.3% among those aged 65 and older

    • Second booster dose: 27.6% of those aged 60–79 (33.3% of those eligible based on the time since their last injection) and 35.5% of those aged 80 and older (46.8% of those eligible)

  • As schools reopen and activities that facilitate virus transmission resume, adherence to the combined measures remains essential:

    • keeping COVID-19 vaccinations up to date, particularly the second booster dose for at-risk individuals;

    • isolation in the event of a positive COVID-19 test and/or symptoms;

    • adherence to preventive measures: consistent mask-wearing in the presence of the most vulnerable or in crowded indoor settings (particularly on public transportation or at large gatherings), as well as handwashing and ventilation of enclosed spaces.
