Prevalence of antibiotic treatment in hospitals. Results of the 2001 National Survey on the Prevalence of Nosocomial Infections.

According to data on antibiotic sales, France is the leading consumer of antibiotics in Europe, with 3 Defined Daily Doses per 1,000 hospital-days. Individual data were collected during hospital surveys; however, these cannot be extrapolated to all healthcare facilities. One of the objectives of the 2001 National Prevalence Survey (ENP) was to describe antibiotic use in hospitals on a given day. (R.A.)
