AIDS Surveillance: Mandatory Reporting of AIDS. The Fight Against HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in France. 10 Years of Surveillance, 1996–2005
- More than 4,000 cases of AIDS were diagnosed in 1996 and approximately 1,200 in 2005. - The number of AIDS cases and deaths decreased significantly between 1996 and 1998, with a more pronounced decline among people infected through homosexual contact and injection drug use than through heterosexual contact. - From 1998 to 2005, the number of AIDS cases among women remained stable, while it continued to decline among men; women accounted for 33% of AIDS cases in 2005. - The most common initial AIDS-defining conditions since 2000 have been Pneumocystis pneumonia and tuberculosis. - Nearly half of the AIDS cases diagnosed in 2005 were in people who were unaware of their HIV-positive status. - Survival following an AIDS diagnosis has increased significantly since 1996.
