Hepatitis B and C Viruses in the HIV-Positive Population. Combating HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in France: 10 Years of Surveillance, 1996–2005
Among the HIV-positive population: - high prevalence of HCV infection (between 24% and 28%), 70% of whom are people who use drugs; - high prevalence of cirrhosis among patients with chronic hepatitis C; - antiviral treatment for half of patients with chronic hepatitis C who have undergone liver fibrosis assessment; - high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B (7%), which varies little depending on the mode of HIV transmission; - high prevalence of cirrhosis among patients with chronic hepatitis B; - Antiviral treatment for three-quarters of patients with chronic hepatitis B, a proportion that is higher among those receiving antiretroviral therapy (81% vs. 12%); - Low proportion of people vaccinated against hepatitis B (10%); - Prevalence of HBV-HCV coinfection at 1.6%. Since 2001, cases of acute hepatitis C have emerged among HIV-positive men who have sex with men.
