Occupational HIV and HCV Infections Among Healthcare Workers. Status as of December 31, 2003. National Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, 2001–2003

Key figures as of December 31, 2003, since the start of surveillance: - 13 occupational HIV seroconversions among healthcare workers, the most recent of which occurred in 1997 (and 32 suspected infections), 13 needle stick injuries involved, including 12 following intravenous or intra-arterial procedures, and 4 failures of antiretroviral prophylaxis. - 52 occupational HCV seroconversions among healthcare workers (between 2 and 5 per year since 1997), 48 needle stick injuries (including 11 not related to a hollow needle used for intravascular procedures), 3 cuts, and 1 blood contact on broken skin.
