International Migrants Day, December 18, 2020

International Migrants Day is an opportunity to highlight that access to healthcare and preventive health measures for migrants are critical public health issues. For several years now, Santé publique France has been implementing projects targeting these populations and providing resources for healthcare professionals.

A toolkit for leading health education activities

This toolkit is intended for healthcare professionals, volunteers, and health students working with vulnerable adult populations. It includes a theoretical section on conducting health education sessions in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and a practical section with suggested activities to help develop the skills of the target populations. It can be used with migrant populations who speak other languages or who do not have a strong command of French.

COVID-19: Leading Health Education Activities for People in Vulnerable Situations

Bilingual health booklets in 15 languages

Produced in partnership with the Committee for the Health of Exiles (Comede) and several partner organizations, the bilingual health booklets are intended for migrants in precarious situations. They provide information on health, rights, and administrative procedures in France. Their bilingual format makes it easier to communicate with doctors, social workers, or other professionals.

A communication initiative for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa

For several years, Santé publique France has been implementing communication initiatives targeting populations from French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa living in France.

The “Health Topic of the Week” on Africa Radio addresses a different prevention topic each week and serves as a weekly program for listeners of the most influential African media outlet in France. Every Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., the health program brings together many listeners to discuss various topics such as vaccination, tuberculosis, HIV, nutrition, skin lightening, contraception, and many others.

“L’invité Santé” is a social media initiative, particularly on Facebook, that complements the radio program. Short videos (2 to 3 minutes) are posted every Tuesday around 5 p.m. as a regular feature. They feature a guest from the nonprofit sector, the medical field, or an expert from Santé publique France, and highlight a prevention initiative. For example, topics such as physical activity, the “Month Without Tobacco” campaign, screening, nutrition, “Agir pour bébé,” and vaccination have already been covered. Since March 2020, a special production approach has been implemented for our COVID-19 videos.

A dedicated initiative was launched for the December 1 HIV campaign, involving the creation and broadcast of radio spots, as well as the production of testimonials from HIV-positive individuals for publication on social media.
