"No alcohol during pregnancy": a message for everyone

To mark World Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day on September 9, 2020, Santé publique France is reiterating its safety message—“no alcohol during pregnancy”—and raising awareness among women and their families and friends about the risks associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

The support of those around pregnant women: a key role highlighted this summer

During the summer, when opportunities to drink alcohol are often more frequent, why not share the responsibility for zero alcohol with the people around pregnant women—partners, family, or even friends? "All in solidarity and supporting zero alcohol": this slogan from the alcohol and pregnancy campaign was heard all summer on the radio, aired on TV across the M6 Group’s channels, and seen online through a major digital campaign. Its goal: to remind people that a pregnant woman who doesn’t drink might be someone who wasn’t offered alcohol, or someone who wasn’t the only one toasting with a non-alcoholic drink!

SAF Day, to reach out to women and remind them of the precautionary principle: “zero alcohol during pregnancy”

Because it is important to continue raising awareness and reminding pregnant women or women of childbearing age of the precautionary principle “zero alcohol during pregnancy,” September is an opportunity to reach out to them through Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day.

Indeed, drinking alcohol during pregnancy is toxic to the fetus and can lead to various complications (growth retardation, damage to the central nervous system, birth defects, etc.), of which fetal alcohol syndrome is the most severe form.
That is why, starting September 9, 2020, and throughout the month, Santé publique France is launching a major digital campaign, a radio spot highlighting the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, and a supplementary poster campaign in the overseas departments.
