La Santé de l'homme, No. 336: Nutrition and Disadvantaged Populations.
In response to the growing number of people in France living in precarious circumstances—for whom access to food is a major challenge—various initiatives have been implemented. This report provides an overview of food assistance programs and services, including food collection by food banks and the distribution of food and/or meals by social centers and charitable organizations. Recently established structures, such as social grocery stores, operate on the principle of active beneficiary involvement. The nutrition barometer conducted by the CFES and CERIN (Center for Nutritional Research and Information) provides data on the dietary practices of this population group. The health risks of malnutrition are briefly outlined. The important role that specific nutrition education, involving dietitians, can play is highlighted. The CFES educational resource "Food at Any Cost" was developed for this purpose. The two functions of school meal programs are reiterated: being accessible to all and ensuring students receive a balanced diet.
