Summary for professionals of the ANSES recommendations from February 2016 on physical activity and sedentary behavior. Update of the PNNS guidelines

The PNNS guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behavior were updated in February 2016 in a collective expert report coordinated by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES). Separate recommendations were formulated regarding increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior. The types of physical activity recommended were specified: endurance, muscle strengthening, flexibility, and balance. Specific recommendations were issued for children, adolescents, adults, pregnant women, women in the postpartum period, menopausal women, people aged 65 and older, and people with functional limitations. However, the technical nature of these new recommendations highlighted the need to make them accessible to the general public and to simplify their wording so that they could be easily used by professionals working to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior. As a first step toward making the recommendations accessible to the general public, Santé publique France coordinated a working group composed of experts who contributed to the ANSES report and a representative from the Directorate General for Health. This document is the result of that group’s work. It presents the new recommendations in layman’s terms, faithful to the scientific recommendations of the ANSES report and illustrated with numerous examples. It is available to all professionals who wish to share the updated recommendations or use them in their practice. This effort to make the new recommendations on physical activity and sedentary behavior accessible to the general public will be continued by Santé publique France, with the aim of developing guidelines for the general public that will be tested through surveys of the general population and health and social care professionals.
