A week to highlight the importance of getting vaccinated
European Immunization Week mobilizes nearly 200 countries worldwide each year. It serves as a key opportunity to highlight the benefits of vaccination—for oneself and for others—and thereby increase protection against potentially serious diseases. In France, the vast majority of the population supports vaccination. However, this support is beginning to wane. In this context, and to address the public’s concerns, the Ministry of Health and Santé publique France are launching vaccination-info-service.fr, the new go-to website for providing factual and scientifically validated information on vaccination.
According to preliminary data from the 2016 Health Barometer conducted by Santé publique France1, 75% of people aged 15 to 75 say they support vaccination. The more well-informed they feel, the greater their support. While the French recognize the effectiveness of vaccines and are convinced of the severity of the diseases they protect against, certain vaccines still raise reservations. This is particularly true for vaccines against seasonal influenza, hepatitis B, and, to a lesser extent, human papillomavirus.
Vaccination coverage in 2016 largely unaffected by vaccine hesitancy
For the majority of infant vaccinations, the latest vaccination coverage estimates from Santé publique France show high rates. This is the case for vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, and polio, as well as pertussis and invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infections, which are close to 97%. Vaccination coverage against pneumococcus exceeds the 90% threshold, and coverage for hepatitis B continues to rise (88% for the full vaccination series). Finally, although it remains below recommendations, coverage against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) reaches nearly 90% for the first dose of the vaccine.
Vaccination-info-service.fr : the new source of reliable information on vaccination
As the first institutional website on vaccination aimed at the general public, vaccination-info-service.fr is designed to provide factual, practical, and scientifically validated information to answer the public’s questions about vaccination. It was developed by Santé publique France at the request of the Ministry of Health and in collaboration with institutional partners and experts in the relevant fields. The site offers comprehensive coverage and addresses general and practical questions about vaccinations, diseases and related vaccines, vaccines currently available in France, vaccination throughout life, and vaccination in the context of chronic diseases. This site is designed to be continuously updated with new content.
