Entred 3, the third edition of a unique study of patients with diabetes

First conducted in 2001 and repeated in 2007, Entred is the only study that provides epidemiological, medical, economic, and social data on people receiving treatment for diabetes in France.

This information is essential for developing prevention strategies that are critical to improving the health status, medical practices, and quality of life of people with diabetes. Entred meets the information needs of all healthcare stakeholders working in the field of diabetes.

The importance and cross-cutting nature of the issues it addresses are reflected in the involvement of numerous institutional partners.

Conducted among a sample of 13,000 people with diabetes on medication selected at random, the Entred 3 study is characterized by a dual patient-physician approach. It also seeks to describe changes in the care pathway, including educational initiatives undertaken, healthcare utilization, and patient adherence to treatment.

Measuring Changes

This new national study on diabetes will focus primarily on long-term changes in the health status of people with diabetes, their quality of life, and their use of healthcare services. It will also examine recent developments in diabetes management, such as the use of connected devices or health apps.

The renewal of the Entred study is crucial to demonstrate the progress made since 2007, as well as the progress still needed, to better manage people with diabetes and prevent and delay the onset of serious complications (cardiac, ophthalmological, podiatric, renal, etc.).

Describing the characteristics of people with diabetes living in French overseas territories and patients with type 1 diabetes

A new feature of Entred 3 will be the ability to study the specific characteristics of certain populations. Thus, the study will focus on:

• people with diabetes living in the overseas departments, given that diabetes and its complications are nearly twice as common there as in mainland France.

• adults with type 1 diabetes, for whom little data is currently available.

Results are expected starting in mid-2020.

Key findings from the Entred studies:

• Improved control of vascular risk factors (blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and glycemic control) in 2007 compared to 2001

• An increase in obesity compared to 2001 among people with type 2 diabetes (41% in 2007, +7 percentage points)

• Smoking reported by more than one-third of young people with diabetes

• A reduced quality of life primarily due to diabetes complications, which remained too common in 2007 despite improved access to care

• Significant socioeconomic inequalities regarding risk factors (obesity, smoking, poor glycemic control) and cardiovascular and podiatric complications

• An estimated average out-of-pocket cost for people with diabetes of €660 in 2007, primarily for medications, medical devices, and dental care

• An 80% increase in healthcare costs covered by health insurance (€12.5 billion in 2007 vs. €7.1 billion in 2001), primarily due to the rise in the number of people with diabetes and the intensification of monitoring and treatments
