As part of its monitoring, early warning, and surveillance activities, Santé publique France produces public health indicators based on various surveillance systems, epidemiological surveys of the general population, behavioral surveys, and medical-administrative databases. This data is analyzed and published on a regular basis. To increase their visibility and make them more accessible to a wider audience—particularly all healthcare stakeholders—Santé publique France is launching Géodes today, a dynamic web platform that brings together a large portion of the health indicators it produces. This one-of-a-kind tool allows users to view this information in the form of dynamic maps, tables, and graphs/time series.
Geodes: A Breakthrough in the Presentation of Surveillance Data
One of Santé publique France’s missions is to produce indicators that support decision-making and action in public health, adapting to societal, digital, and scientific developments and challenges. Until now, indicators were reported through bulletins or scientific publications. The Géodes observatory responds to a strong commitment to transparency and modernity by providing simplified, open access to many of the agency’s indicators.
Through this online platform, users will be able to:
Access over 300 indicators covering 40 topics
Compare regional and national indicators
View technical details for each indicator: source, update period, etc.
Download maps and data and share them on social media
Be directed from each indicator to the relevant thematic page on the Santé publique France website
Import data into Géodes and compare it with Santé publique France’s data.
"Géodes serves as a showcase for the agency and, more specifically, for the indicators it produces. This evolving platform is designed to provide healthcare stakeholders with increasingly geographically detailed indicators—at the regional, departmental, and, in the future, municipal levels—in a fully transparent manner," emphasizes François Bourdillon, Director General of Santé publique France
Géodes, a scalable platform serving users
Géodes brings together numerous indicators available from the agency, notably from:
70 specific surveillance systems, such as those for notifiable diseases.
Syndromic surveillance (data from emergency rooms, physicians, and deaths)
Surveys such as the Santé publique France Barometer, Esteban, Elfe, etc.
Data from partners (National Health Data System (SNDS), surveys, registries, etc.).
The platform is primarily intended for healthcare professionals, institutions, researchers, epidemiologists, journalists, associations, and students. Its purpose is to provide them with increasingly geographically detailed indicators to meet their needs. This level of detail is made possible in particular by the use of SNDS data (medical-administrative databases) capable of providing information at the municipal level. "We have integrated a large portion of the agency’s indicators, and the platform will continue to expand. Géodes is a collective and cross-functional project of the agency," explains Yann Le Strat, Director of the Data Support, Processing, and Analysis Division (DATA).
Géodes: Simple and Intuitive to Use
The Géodes platform brings together most of the topics within Santé publique France’s scope. These include diseases and injuries monitored by the agency (bronchiolitis, influenza, diabetes, etc.) and health determinants collected through surveys on health behaviors (tobacco use, vaccinations, workplace accidents, etc.), organized into two navigation trees.Géodes allows users to perform real-time queries on diseases and health determinants across all of France and offers the ability to observe the health status of the population in a region and to compare regions with one another. Documents generated from various queries (maps, tables, summary graphs) can be downloaded or printed. Maps can be shared as links, embedded in a web page, or shared on social media. To help users get started with this tool, Santé publique France has created educational resources in the form of video tutorials: an introduction to the tool, its features, and two typical user journeys.
