The fight against diabetes in Réunion is a major challenge for all local stakeholders. On November 14, World Diabetes Day, the Réunion Regional Health Agency, the Regional Health Observatory, and Santé Publique France will release updated statistics on the disease in Réunion.
These data are derived from studies conducted locally by the ORS as part of the Réunion Nutrition and Diabetes Control Program (PRND), and nationally from the publication by Santé Publique France of two studies, one of which was extended for the first time to the overseas departments and regions.
In Réunion, as in the other overseas departments and regions (DROMs), the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is particularly high, and chronic complications are more frequent. In 2021, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes affected 13.6% of Réunion adults aged 18 to 85, more than double the rate in mainland France (5.7%). In addition, 2.9% of people report having “mild diabetes.”
Compared to other territories, the situation in Réunion is characterized by an overrepresentation of women, a lower socioeconomic status among those affected, a higher frequency of diabetes complications, and a younger age of onset. Beyond the findings shared with other overseas departments and regions (DROMs), the studies highlight specific characteristics of Réunion and justify the added value—emphasized by Santé Publique France—of the PRND, described as a “promising local initiative.” These new analyses will enable the regional policy to be adjusted through the upcoming 2024–2028 PRND to better prevent diabetes and its complications.
To mark World Diabetes Day on November 14, health partners and stakeholders are organizing numerous activities across the island to continue raising public awareness and maintain everyone’s commitment to the cause.
