Public Health Monitoring in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region. Bulletin dated October 22, 2026.

Key Points

Arboviral Diseases

  • New outbreak of locally transmitted dengue (Var).
  • 26 locally acquired cases of chikungunya in the town of Cavalaire (Var).
  • Decrease in reports of West Nile virus infection.

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • In Week 42, ARI activity was at baseline levels in the community and in hospitals.
    • Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: baseline level, low activity. Among the
influenza viruses detected since Week 42, the majority were type A.
    • Bronchiolitis: baseline level; activity is rising at SOS Médecins
(low patient numbers) and slightly declining in emergency departments, a trend that is expected to continue
this week due to school holidays. Rhinoviruses and
enteroviruses, which also cause bronchiolitis, are circulating.
    • COVID-19: SARS-CoV-2 is still actively circulating, but the number of
emergency care visits for COVID-19 remains lower than last year,
although it is trending closer to last year’s levels, particularly at SOS Médecins.

Mortality

  • The number of deaths from all causes, based on INSEE civil registry data, remained
within the usual range of fluctuation in Week 41.
  • The number of all-cause deaths certified electronically increased
in Week 42, reaching a level higher than in Week 42 of 2025 and Week 42 of 2024.
This increase is at least partly explained by the rise in the deployment
rate at the regional level: 55% in October 2024, 64% in October 2025
, and 69% in August 2026 (provisional estimate). The increase in the deployment
rate since late 2025 has been most pronounced in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence,
Hautes-Alpes, and Vaucluse departments, although it remains below the regional average
    in these departments.
