Public Health Monitoring in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region. Bulletin dated October 7, 2026.

Key Points

Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika

  • Two outbreaks of locally transmitted chikungunya have been identified in the Var department in Cavalaire-sur-Mer (9 cases, an increase of 6) and Saint-Raphaël (2 cases, an increase of 1).

West Nile virus infections

  • Active circulation of the virus in the Bouches-du-Rhône, Vaucluse, and Var departments
  • A total of 66 human cases have been identified in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region (+6 cases compared to the last report), nearly half of whom were hospitalized. Thirty-one cases were diagnosed in Bouches-du-Rhône, 18 in Vaucluse, and 17 in Var.
  • A very large number of equine cases have been diagnosed in these departments.

Acute respiratory infections

  • Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: low activity
  • Bronchiolitis (under 1 year of age): activity is on the rise in emergency departments, at a level consistent with previous years (7.5% of cases among infants under 1 year of age)
  • COVID-19: SARS-CoV-2 is circulating at a higher level than during the same period last year (based on virological indicators and wastewater data), but the use of emergency care for COVID-19 is significantly lower than in the previous two years (activity is on the rise among SOS Médecins providers and remains stable in emergency departments).

Mortality

  • The number of deaths from all causes, based on INSEE civil registry data, remained
within the usual range of fluctuation at the regional level in S39.
  • Data on electronic certification of all-cause deaths in S40 also remained within the same range as that typically observed (graphs not shown).
