COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy as of June 18, 2021

Key points

Guadeloupe

The decline in virological indicators continued in week 2021-23, with incidence and positivity rates below the alert and vigilance thresholds, respectively. The number of emergency room visits, as well as new admissions across all departments, also decreased compared to week 2021-22. However, the Alpha variant (20I/50Y.V1) is actively circulating in the archipelago (>95% of screened RT-PCR tests) and six cases carrying the VOC 21A/478K (B.1.617.2, Delta) were confirmed by genomic sequencing results received on June 10 and 14. Beta-type variants have also recently been identified within a cluster. The effective R value for samples collected in week 2021-23 was significantly less than 1: 0.60 [0.50–0.72].

Saint Barthélemy

The virus is circulating at a low level. Recorded virological surveillance indicators remained at a low level. In hospitals, one new hospitalization was recorded during week 2021-23.

Saint Martin

In week 2021-23, virological surveillance indicators were decreasing but remained at a high level; this decrease may be partly due to reduced testing. Additionally, new hospital admissions and the number of emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 were decreasing. The virus is still actively circulating in the territory.

Individual prevention measures, collective containment measures, and the acceleration of vaccination efforts must be strengthened.
