Public Health Surveillance in Rhône-Alpes. Epidemiological Update as of January 17, 2013

Situation in Rhône-Alpes

  • Acute Diarrhea / Gastroenteritis: An epidemic is underway in our region. The incidence rate estimated by the Sentinelles network for Week 2 (January 7–13) is 367 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

  • Flu-like Illnesses: The flu epidemic continues, with an increase in the estimated number of flu-like illness cases for weeks 1 and 2 (December 31 to January 13) to 391 and 505 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively. As of January 13, 20 severe cases of influenza, including one death, had been reported in our region, representing one-fifth of all cases recorded nationwide as of mid-January.

  • Bronchiolitis: Visits to emergency departments for bronchiolitis have decreased since early January, and this trend is continuing. This phenomenon should be viewed in conjunction with the declining circulation of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus, noted by the CNR at the same time.

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning: During the first weeks of January, the number of reported cases of carbon monoxide poisoning decreased.

  • Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) in Senior Care Facilities: Since Week 51 (December 17–23, 2012), thirteen clusters of acute respiratory infections in senior care facilities—including one in a post-acute care and rehabilitation facility—have been reported to the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and recorded in a dedicated database. For five of these, the etiology was identified (4 influenza A and 1 RSV).
