Extreme Cold: Precautions to Take! Winter is here, and temperatures have dropped… The cold can sometimes reach temperatures that vulnerable people, such as the elderly or children, need to protect themselves against. During winter, temperatures hover around freezing and can pose health risks: hypothermia (a drop in body temperature below 35°C), frostbite, and an increased risk of cardiovascular issues… However, simple precautions can help avoid these risks, while paying extra attention to children and the elderly, who often don’t complain about the cold! The cold places extra strain on our bodies, particularly on our hearts, which beat faster to combat the cold. Therefore, during periods of extreme cold, it’s best to limit physical exertion even if you’re in good health.Contrary to popular belief, drinking alcohol does not warm you up. On the contrary, it can be dangerous because the numbing effect masks the warning signs of the cold, and you may forget to protect yourself. Do not overheat your home; instead, heat it normally while ensuring proper ventilation to avoid any risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. To avoid the risk of hypothermia or frostbite, dress warmly, especially covering your extremities, and cover your nose and mouth to minimize exposure to cold air. Additionally, good shoes help prevent falls. During an extreme cold snap, it’s best to stay indoors as much as possible to shelter from the cold, but make sure you have enough water and food on hand and keep your home heated as usual. If you absolutely must go out, be extra vigilant, dress warmly, try to limit physical exertion, and avoid going out at night since it’s even colder then. It is also best not to take babies and young children outside, even if they are well-protected. Finally, if you must use your vehicle, it is important to check its overall condition and not to leave without checking the weather forecast and bringing a first-aid kit, blankets, and a hot drink!
