Health Surveillance in the Grand Est Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 12, 2017.

Key Points

Gastroenteritis Surveillance

  • Gastroenteritis-related activity in emergency departments across the region remains at a high level. However, for the first time since Week 42, it has begun to decline. In Week 1, 207 diagnoses per 10,000 visits were recorded.

  • According to the SOS Médecins network, gastroenteritis activity fluctuates around the levels typically observed in previous years during the same period.

  • High activity is still being observed within the Sentinelles Network, and the epidemic threshold for acute diarrhea has been exceeded for 8 weeks.

Bronchiolitis Surveillance

  • In the Grand Est region, the proportion of activity related to bronchiolitis is beginning to decline in the region’s emergency departments.

  • The downward trend in bronchiolitis-related activity is also observed among SOS Médecins associations.

  • However, the Grand Est region remains in the epidemic phase.

  • RSV continues to circulate in the region.

Influenza Surveillance

  • In Week 1, influenza-related activity in emergency departments decreased for the first time since the start of the epidemic. However, this trend will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

  • This decrease is not observed among SOS Médecins associations, where influenza-related activity continues to rise.

  • The Grand-Est region is in the epidemic phase

  • Virological data also show significant circulation of the influenza A virus.

Monitoring of carbon monoxide poisoning

  • During weeks 52 and 1, there were 10 incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning affecting 27 people.

Mortality surveillance

  • According to data available as of January 9, 2017, a significant increase in mortality across all age groups was observed in December in the Grand Est region. The observed number of deaths was significantly higher than expected in weeks 49, 50, 51, and 52.
