Despite significant improvements over the past few decades, French Guiana still lags far behind mainland France in terms of perinatal health: infant mortality there is two and a half times higher, and perinatal mortality and preterm birth rates are twice as high as in mainland France. Among a range of factors, the healthcare and support system is under strain due to significant immigration driven by the appeal of this remote corner of French territory. Sixty percent of women giving birth in French Guiana are of foreign origin. The teenage pregnancy rate, at 8%, is eight times higher than in mainland France. Significant resources must be allocated, both for prevention efforts and for hospital facilities.
