COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of December 22, 2022

Key Points

  • In Week 50, virological indicators were declining in French Guiana: the incidence rate fell from 202 to 110 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the positivity rate from 25% to 17%. The R0 value also reflects this situation: it stood at 0.55 [0.49–0.61] for the period from December 11 to 17, compared to 0.73 [0.67–0.79] for the previous week.

  • Indicators are declining across all sectors of French Guiana. The number of new cases has halved in the Cayenne Island, Savanes, and West Coast sectors, and has dropped by two-thirds in the Maroni and Interior sectors. The number of new cases remains stable in the Oyapock sector.

  • Visits to emergency rooms for suspected COVID-19 have decreased compared to last week. Hospitalizations across all departments are stable compared to the previous week. Two people were admitted to intensive care, compared to one last week. One death was recorded at the hospital.

  • The rate of consultations for acute respiratory infections has increased by 10% compared to the previous week. The ongoing bronchiolitis outbreak and the onset of the flu season may partly explain this trend.
