COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of February 17, 2022

Key Points

Since the epidemic peaked in early January in French Guiana, the epidemiological situation has been improving significantly at a steady pace for four consecutive weeks: the number of cases has halved over the past four weeks. The incidence rate stands at 171 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the effective R value is stable and relatively low (0.43).

Cases have been halved in the main sectors (Cayenne Island, Savanes, and the Western Coast). This decline applies to all sectors except Oyapock, where, following a sharp drop in incidence last week, a slight increase is now being observed.

Hospitalization indicators are declining, reflecting the drop in infections observed since early January. Indeed, emergency room visits and routine hospitalizations have been halved, as was the case last week, and fewer than 5 people have been admitted to intensive care over the past 7 days. The weekly death toll is down for the second consecutive week.

There has been an increase in the rate of consultations for acute respiratory infections in primary care: this increase reflects the increased circulation of the influenza virus in the population.

Vaccination coverage with at least one dose has not increased compared to last week, and coverage with a booster dose has risen by 1 percentage point among those aged 12 and older.
