COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of July 21, 2022

Key Points

  • In S28, virological indicators are declining, resulting in an adjusted incidence rate of 399 cases per 10,000 inhabitants (-7%). This decline is observed in the Cayenne Island and Savanes sectors, where the virus was circulating most extensively. In the West, the trend is stable. A slight increase is observed in the Oyapock sector, with a positivity rate of 18% in Week 28.

  • Monitoring of screening data in week 28 shows continued spread of variants carrying a mutation at position L452 (C1), which account for 91% of screened samples. Sequencing data indicate that the majority of these are BA.5 sublineages of Omicron.

  • Hospital indicators are also improving. New admissions across all departments are declining. Two ICU admissions were reported in week S28, and one in-hospital death was recorded.
