COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of September 17, 2020

Key Points

Since early March, 9,623 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in French Guiana. Last week, an average of 27 cases were confirmed each day, and the weekly incidence stands at 65 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the weekly testing rate remains at over 1,000 tests per 100,000 inhabitants. As of September 15, the effective reproduction number (R_eff) is estimated at 0.88 [0.76–1.00]. New hospitalizations continued to decline, and ICU admissions and deaths remained stable, with 4 admissions and 1 death last week. French Guiana has recorded 65 hospital deaths to date. After three weeks of stability, confirmed cases are declining across the entire territory. The data are encouraging, but the regional incidence remains relatively high, and efforts must continue to ensure the curve stays on its current trajectory and to prevent an early resurgence of the epidemic. As collective measures are eased, the goal is to maintain high levels of preventive measures in all settings (workplaces, schools, public spaces, etc.). Wearing a mask, physical distancing (maintaining a distance of at least one meter, avoiding handshakes and hugs), and hand hygiene must therefore become standard practice in daily life. The most vulnerable are protected only by the responsible actions of those around them. Getting tested, even without symptoms, is an opportunity to protect yourself and your loved ones.
