Epidemiological Situation of Dengue Fever in French Guiana. Update as of February 25, 2021.
Key Points
The epidemic, which had been on a downward trend regionally since peaking in June–July 2020, showed an increase in early 2021, reflecting a resurgence of viral circulation on the island of Cayenne.
Viral circulation has dropped back to very low levels in certain areas. The Committee on Infectious and Emerging Diseases, meeting on February 10, therefore proposed the following phase changes:
Maroni sector, in epidemic phase since S2020-04: proposal to transition to the end-of-epidemic phase in S2020-40,
Western Coastal sector, in epidemic phase since S2020-17: proposal to transition to the end-of-epidemic phase in S2020-49,
Oyapock sector, in the epidemic outbreak phase since S2020-17: proposal to return to the sporadic case phase in S2020-43.
The other sectors remain in the epidemic phase but show regional disparities in the evolution of the epidemiological situation:
Cayenne Island sector, in epidemic phase since S2020-17: resurgence of viral circulation since the beginning of 2021,
Kourou sector, in epidemic phase since S2020-12: stable,
Interior and Eastern Coast sector, in an epidemic since S2020-37: sharp decline
Emergency room visits for dengue are slightly up at CHC and stable at a very low level at CHK and CHOG. Hospitalizations are stable at a moderate level at CHC.
The circulating serotypes are predominantly DEN-1, followed by DEN-2 and, sporadically, DEN-3, with the majority of cases imported from Martinique.
Key indicators
Since January 2019:
11,330 clinically suggestive cases
5,014 confirmed cases
Circulating serotypes: DEN-1 (82%), DEN-2 (17%), DEN-3 (<1%)
275 hospitalizations
4 deaths (all in 2020)
