Epidemiological Situation of Dengue in French Guiana. Update as of December 17, 2020.

Key Points

Epidemiological Overview of the Situation in French Guiana

The dengue epidemic in French Guiana peaked in June–July 2020 and is now in a declining phase at the regional level.

The Oyapock sector is in the phase of sporadic outbreaks, and almost no cases have been detected there for several weeks. All other sectors are in the epidemic phase but show regional disparities in the evolution of the dengue epidemiological situation:

  • Maroni sector: in an epidemic phase since S2020-04, residual viral circulation

  • Western Coastal sector: in epidemic phase since S2020-17, residual viral circulation

  • Kourou sector: epidemic since S2020-12, decreasing

  • Cayenne Island sector: epidemic since S2020-17, stabilization

  • Interior and East Coast sector: epidemic since S2020-37, decreasing

Emergency room visits for dengue have stabilized at CHC and CHOG (no data for CHK). Hospitalizations for dengue have decreased since August.

The circulating serotypes are primarily DEN-1 and DEN-2. The importation of DEN-3 cases—the serotype circulating in the current epidemic in the Antilles—could pose a risk of reigniting the epidemic in French Guiana. Between August and November, several cases imported from Martinique were detected, as well as cases of local transmission.

Key indicators

  • Since 2019, 10,260 clinically suggestive cases and 4,557 confirmed cases of dengue

  • Serotypes detected since 2019: DEN-1 (79%), DEN-2 (20%), DEN-3 (<1%)

  • 261 dengue-related hospitalizations reported since 2019 (250 in 2020)

  • 4 deaths among people with dengue, all in 2020
