Surveillance of COVID-19, Influenza, and Bronchiolitis in French Guiana. Update as of March 16, 2023.

Key Points

COVID-19

  • In S10, virological indicators reflected low circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in French Guiana. The incidence rate and positivity rate were rising but remained at a low level (11 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 5.6%, respectively). Indicators were rising but remained at a low level in the Cayenne Island, Savanes, and Oyapock sectors and were stable in the other sectors. Emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 were similar to those of last week. Seven new hospitalizations across all departments were recorded compared to last week; these were hospitalizations for reasons other than COVID-19. No admissions to intensive care were recorded, as in the previous week. No deaths were reported in Week 10, as in Week 09. The Omicron variant is the only one circulating in French Guiana. The XBB.1.5 recombinant was identified in all sequenced samples from Week 03 to Week 08 (N = 5).

Influenza

  • In Week 10, influenza activity in emergency departments and decentralized prevention and care centers was similar to levels observed before the epidemic: the seasonal influenza epidemic has ended. A summary of the epidemic will be presented shortly.

Bronchiolitis

  • The region is in the inter-epidemic phase.
