Health Surveillance in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Epidemiological Update, July 25, 2013.

Asthma attacks: At the regional level, outpatient and hospital surveillance indicators have generally been on the decline in recent weeks.

Allergies: At the regional level, outpatient and hospital surveillance indicators have been decreasing since late June, although the still-significant presence of grass pollen keeps the allergy risk at a moderate level.

Heat-related illnesses: Nationally, since early July there has been a notable increase—though within the expected range given the high temperatures—in emergency room visits and calls to SOS Médecins for heat-related illnesses. Regionally, a moderate and expected increase in heat-related illnesses has also been observed over the past two weeks.

Acute gastroenteritis: Nationally, the incidence of acute gastroenteritis is below the epidemic threshold. Regionally, outpatient and inpatient surveillance indicators remain stable and below the regional epidemic threshold (SOS Médecins data).

Emergency room visits by children under 1 year of age and adults over 75 years of age: At the departmental level, emergency room visits by infants under 1 year of age have been declining since mid-April. Visits by patients over 75 years of age, meanwhile, remain generally stable.

Deaths among those aged 75 and older and 85 and older: At the regional level, deaths among people aged 75 and older and 85 and older are stable and below regional alert thresholds.

Enhanced monitoring under the Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS): Nationally, a notable increase—though within expected proportions given the high temperatures—in emergency room visits and calls to SOS Médecins for heat-related conditions has been observed since early July (with a peak on July 22). The heat wave that has settled over all of France has led to 28 departments being placed under a "yellow heat wave alert" and 2 departments under an "orange heat wave alert." At the regional level, a moderate and expected increase in heat-related illnesses has been observed since July 8. Météo France forecasts the arrival of a storm system this Sunday, bringing cooler temperatures; biometeorological indices are expected to remain below threshold values, thus not warranting the issuance of a health alert.
