Suicidal Thoughts and Reported Suicide Attempts (Public Health France Barometer 2024 – Ages 18–79)

  • In 2024 in the Hauts-de-France region, 6.5% of people aged 18–79 reported having had suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months. 6.7% reported having attempted suicide at some point in their lives, including just under 1% in the past 12 months.

Emergency room visits for self-harm (OSCOUR® 2024 – all ages)

  • In 2024, 10,075 emergency department visits due to self-harm were recorded, representing 5.7‰ of emergency department activity, stable compared to 2023 (+1%). Nearly two out of three emergency department visits involved women (63.2%). The highest proportions among them were recorded among 11- to 17-year-olds (16.4‰) and 18- to 24-year-olds (14.2‰).

Hospitalizations for self-harm (SNDS PMSI-MCO 2024 – all ages)

  • In 2024, 15,319 hospitalizations for self-harm were recorded, representing a standardized rate of 251 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase compared to 2023 (+5%). The upward trend in hospitalization rates among girls and women aged 11 to 24 continued in 2024. Young women aged 11 to 24 had the highest hospitalization rate for self-harm, particularly adolescent girls aged 11 to 17, with 1,033 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants.

  • Drug overdose was the method used in 78% of hospital stays, the most common method regardless of gender.

Deaths by Suicide (SNDS CépiDc 2023 – all ages)

  • In 2023, 881 suicide deaths were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 15 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, stable compared to 2022 (-5%). Men aged 45 and older continued to have the highest suicide death rate in 2023, with a death rate of 35 per 100,000 inhabitants among those aged 45–64 and 43 per 100,000 inhabitants among those aged 65 and older.

  • The most frequently recorded method of suicide on death certificates was hanging (56%), regardless of gender.

2024 Activities of the 3114 and VigilanS Prevention Programs

  • From June to December 2024, 3114, the national suicide prevention hotline, received 18,965 calls from the Hauts-de-France region, an average of 2,709 calls per month.

  • In 2024, two centers participated in the VigilanS program for follow-up and monitoring to prevent repeat suicide attempts in the region, and 6,934 people were enrolled in the program.
